Mind & Body Counselling Berkshire

What is mind and body counselling?

Mind and body counselling blends traditional talking therapy with somatic (body‑based) awareness. It is rooted in the principle that psychological experiences manifest physically through breath, posture, muscle tension, and shifts in the autonomic nervous system, and that working with the body can facilitate profound psychological change. Body cues are the mind’s early messengers: small shifts in breath, tension, or posture that once felt like disruptions but now reveal what needs attention. When you learn to read them, they stop sparking mental spirals and start becoming allies, guiding you toward clarity, steadiness, and deeper self‑understanding.

You can learn to tune into internal sensations (interoception), track physical cues of stress or emotion, and understand how your nervous system responds to life events. This awareness helps you recognise patterns such as bracing, shutting down, or speeding up, which often occur before conscious thoughts, preventing unpleasant spirals and supporting better regulation. Mind‑body approaches draw from somatic psychotherapy, trauma‑informed practice, mindfulness, and movement‑based techniques.

How it works in practice

Mind and body counselling typically combines verbal exploration with guided somatic techniques. These may include breathwork, grounding exercises, gentle movement, sensory tracking, and practices that help regulate the autonomic nervous system. Techniques such as mindfulness, meditation, and body scanning help clients develop a calmer, more attuned relationship with their internal states.

For trauma‑related difficulties, somatic approaches help clients safely access and release physiological patterns associated with fight, flight, freeze, or collapse. Rather than focusing solely on narrative, this approach helps you notice subtle shifts in sensation, tension, and impulse, allowing the body to complete defensive responses interrupted during overwhelming events. This process supports and reduces symptoms of anxiety, stress, and trauma.

Why it is effective

Mind and body counselling works because it engages both cognitive and physiological pathways. By addressing the body’s role in emotional experience, clients gain tools to regulate their nervous system, expand their window of tolerance, and respond to challenges with greater flexibility. Research shows that integrating body‑based methods can improve outcomes for conditions such as PTSD, chronic stress, anxiety, and depression.

The Mind/Body Connection:

Helping the Depleted

Move on from Anxiety, Overwhelm, and Burnout

"Hi, I'm David Pender. M.B.A.C.P., a Berkshire‑based counsellor specialising in anxiety, burnout, stress management, and nervous‑system regulation. I support adults experiencing overwhelm, emotional exhaustion, workplace stress, and long‑term fatigue. I blend evidence‑based therapy, psychoeducation, and practical nervous‑system tools to help clients reduce anxiety symptoms, recover from burnout, and rebuild resilience.

Working across Berkshire, I provide online counselling for anxiety disorders, stress‑related conditions, panic, overthinking, and chronic burnout. You can find my professional presence on the Counselling Directory and at the B.A.C.P. My therapeutic work helps clients understand the mind–body connection, regulate their nervous system, and build sustainable coping strategies. Online sessions are £60 per session, so you don't have to worry about parking before a session. However, I can arrange a private room meeting in Maidenhead for £75 per session.

Intense emotions can temporarily shift how your brain functions. When anxiety, anger, or even excitement rises sharply, the amygdala steps in and takes over. Your heart rate increases, your body shifts into fight‑or‑flight, and the frontal cortex, which supports clear thinking, empathy, and regulation, becomes less accessible. In these moments, you’re not choosing your reactions; your nervous system is responding for you.

This protective shift is incredibly useful in genuine danger, helping you act quickly and instinctively. But in everyday life, conversations, relationships, and work, it can lead to impulsive responses, misunderstandings, or conflict. Learning to recognise when you’re approaching this state is a powerful form of self-awareness. When you understand that emotional intensity is a physiological event rather than a personal flaw, you can create a pause, soothe your system, and respond with greater clarity.

Awareness of this process helps you notice early signs of overwhelm, such as a racing heart or shallow breath. It lets you take preventive steps before slipping into reaction mode. And it supports you in developing practical strategies to regain steadiness, reconnect with your thinking mind, and navigate challenging moments with more ease and intention.

I offer structured support for individuals experiencing emotional regulation difficulties, anxiety, and stress problems.

I deliver a calm, grounded approach tailored to each client’s needs. My specialist knowledge in burnout recovery and anxiety

treatment makes me a trusted counsellor in Berkshire for individuals wanting to regain clarity, confidence, and balance.

Berkshire Mind Body Recovery Plan

A 90‑Day Somatic Redevelopment Journey

Recognise, Explore, Stabilise, Expand, Transform

If you prefer a more structured approach to counselling, I offer The Mind Body Recovery Plan, a 90‑day somatic redevelopment programme designed for people navigating stress, anxiety, and burnout. It offers a calm, structured pathway back to steadiness, supporting the mind–body connection and repairing the nervous system. When your mind races. your body stays tense. You overthink, over-function, or shut down. You lose sight of who you are and what you need. These patterns aren’t personal failures; they’re your nervous system’s responses.

When your mind and body stay in survival mode, clarity fades and emotional resilience drops. But with the right support, your system can shift. Awareness reshapes your choices. Inner awareness reshapes the self. Counselling helps you understand what’s happening beneath the overwhelm. Sessions are calm, grounded and collaborative. You set the pace. We work with both mind and body to help you feel more regulated, centred and aligned.

Burnout, Chronic Stress and Anxiety are not simply a psychological experience; they are a physiological one. When the nervous system has been under strain for too long, it needs time, gentleness, and predictable support to recover. This programme provides that foundation. Over twelve weeks, clients move through a clear arc of stabilisation, repair, reconnection, clarity, recalibration, and integration. Each week offers a focused theme, somatic practices, and reflective discussion points that help clients understand where they are in their recovery and what their system needs next.

This journey is intentionally slow. It is not about pushing through or “getting back to normal.” It is about creating a new normal—one built on awareness, compassion, and sustainable change. Clients learn to soften survival mode, reconnect with their needs, and redesign routines that honour their limits and support long‑term wellbeing.

The aim is not only to reduce symptoms, but to help clients build a new relationship with their body and their future. This is a redevelopment of the internal landscape: a steady return to clarity, capacity, and self‑trust. 90 Day Reset Programme
